It's been a mighty long winter here in the Northwoods, I believe the coldest one since we moved here back in '98. I lost count how many mornings I looked out at the thermometer to see 10, 15, 20 below zero Fahrenheit. However it looks like we are past that bitter, bitter cold now that we are well into March.
The picture of the scary looking creature isn't a Sasquatch it's actually me. That's how I dress when it's well below zero like its been. This year my layers had layers. I bought my most recent Carhartt jacket at least one size too big to fit on over my insulated cover-alls. I began wearing insulated leather mittens a couple years ago and I find I like them the best. Anything with fingers just make my hands too cold.
Our youngest gave us a scare awhile back after she was traveling down the road in white out conditions and almost ran into a plow truck, instead she swerved and ran her Jeep off the road. The plow which was ahead of her was only adding to the whiteout from kicking up all that snow. Fortunately the snow kept her from going too far and the ditch was not very deep where she went in. After a little shoveling it was easy to pull her out. I learned something about when a car goes off into the deep snow like that and that is the snow got packed up all around the engine and the electric cooling fan that Jeeps Cherokees have was blocked from being able to turn. I'm glad I thought to look under the hood, that way I saw to clean all the packed snow out from around the engine.
Earlier, at the beginning of the winter I finally got to an over due project. I built Kelli a new pantry one she's been wanting and needing for a very long time. We had friends living in our cabin at the time one of them a young fellow named Matt. He turned 14 while they were living here and he was a great help to me on the pantry as well as with all the work I do around the farm. He was a natural at carpentry very intuitive for such a young lad. But he comes by it rightly since his dad is a very good carpenter as well.
Once the pantry was completed Kelli wasted no time in filling it up!
It is really nice having a well stocked pantry right by the kitchen. It gets used so much I should have installed a revolving door.
And speaking of doors, I've been thinking about another business idea for some time now and that is of building rustic wooden doors. I've built a number of them over the years and I always enjoy it so I thought I would practice with the pantry door. We get a lot of compliments on the door and pantry but I know I have lots of room for improvement before I try to go into business selling doors. But I like the work so I am looking forward to becoming better at it.
"Behold,
I stand at the door, and knock: if any
man hear my voice, and open the door, I
will
come in to him, and will sup with him, and he
with me."
