Getting Taller

This is an interesting project for us. Watching the four different kinds of lettuce emerge and take shape. The Emerald Oak Leaf is on the right and so far is the tallest. The Endive, second from left is the shrimp of the bunch, but is a little denser in the leaf department. We have from left to right Lolla Rosa Looseleaf, Endive French Blend, Prizehead Looseleaf and Emerald Oakleaf.

Hi Russ and family!

Sorry that I haven't been around for such a long time. Just got tired of blogs, writing and such last winter and have taken a longggggg break.

Glad to see that your salad tray is doing soooo well! From your pictures, it looks like you could do more thinning. Isn't it fun to get a 'taste' of green so early in the season!?!?!? Yes, I know that the harvest won't fill a bowl yet but at least it's a taste without the salad traveling thousands of miles to your plate!

I'm saddened to hear that these increases in fuel prices have been so stressful. It's even sadder to know that fuel costs aren't going to level off but just keep going up over the years. I've read that as the $110/barrel works its way thru the delivery and refining contracts (most have a set price over a specified delivery period) that gas could go past $5/gal. and diesel past $6.

The collapsing value of the dollar on world markets is a major factor in oil, gold and other commodity prices increasing so quickly as well.

I'm afraid that you haven't seen nothing yet my friend!!!

I'm glad to hear that you've kept your debts low on your homestead! Now if you can figure out how to significantly reduce the number of dollars you require per month cuz they are going to be harder and harder to come by even as their purchasing power becomes less and less!

If you really want to see some major storm clouds building overhead, check out the economic headlines gleaned from main street news sources as well as 'tin-foil hat' web sites at:

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

May God continue to watch over you!

P.S.

If you check out the LATOC web site, you will need to click on the 'Breaking News' heading at the top to find the economic news stories. They are updated five days a week.

After following them for a few days, you will really get the feeling that you need to 'run to the hills'------oh ya, you already did that!!!

Praise God!

Hey Steve,

Yeah, I perfectly understand how a person needs a break from these things. As much as I try to be brief on the computer I wind up spending way to much time on it. I'll want to check a thing out here and then over there and oh, I gotta check my email and before you know it a long time can go by and my eyes are watering and my back hurts….. Yeah I know how it is.

You inspired us to plant the lettuce. It’s been a cool experiment for us. It’s getting big enough to add to sandwiches and such. Or a little on the side of a plate.

We aren’t tooo, stressed about the fuel prices. I mean, it is somewhat disconcerting but, we’re open to whatever the Lord has for us. We can take the garbage business or leave it. It’s just a job. Actually, in the end, if we decide to give it up it would be something of a relief and I could spend more time here.

I checked out that website. Sure had lots of information. It’s good to be armed with as much of it as we can get and from different perspectives. Then we can make well informed decisions for our selves and our families. Actually I’m pretty optimistic about the future because I believe that God is going to give us the wisdom and the strength to ride out whatever storms my come our way.

Great to hear from you!

Take care and God bless.

Russ
