Red Fox- Chicken thieving career cut short by me, my 20 gauge shot gun and a prayer.

Congratulations! I've got one around here who's been getting through the defences (past the dogs)lately too. I did not raise chickens all summer to have them vanish so close to the finish line!

Wendy,
My philosophy is if they don’t bother me then I don’t bother them. This young female mauled a chicken but, I got there in time before it was actually killed, thankfully. In my experience once they start they keep on coming back.

Ryan,
I spent part of the day yesterday working on the hide, but it was such a nice looking fox I first called around to different taxidermists to see what the cost would be to make a full mount out of it. The prices ranged from $450 to $700, way more than I would want to spend so I removed the pelt myself. I usually only salt the hides I get which often last for years. I might tan this one though if I can make the time.

Thanks for the comments,
Russ

One time I had a grey fox killing one chicken every night in our yard. These were yard chickens, slept in the rafters and trees. Got me one of our old roosters and tied him to a tree by his leg with some twine and I waited behind my pickup with the double barrel 12. After dark in the light of the moon the shadow appeared and when it got near the rooster that ended that. One less chicken killing grey. Had peace for four years after that.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the story! Good advice for anyone who needs to catch a varmint.
