Cranes and Syrup

The sandhill cranes are back. This picture was taken a few days ago and things have warmed up so much the snow here is gone and the water has soaked in.
We got in one more day of syrup making this last Thursday. This boils down the sap alot faster than does a small kettle over the propane burner like we did last week. We made just over 5 quarts of syrup Thursday. As of yesterday there was still sweet sap running out of the taps and the trees have not yet budded but, we are done for the season since we have a ton of things to do to get ready for the gardens.

Sandhills started hanging out in our fields a few years ago but we haven't seen any babies yet. I can imagine they'd be very interesting to look at.
